LB1, bamboo lamp
LB1 is a freestanding interior lamp designed to support the act of standing up. Conceived for bedside or sofa use, it offers a firm grip point that reduces the effort needed to shift from sitting or lying down to standing, while reading as a piece of domestic furniture rather than a medical device.
Bamboo is the project's central material, both structurally and formally. Its high rigidity once dry makes it suitable for bearing the load of a person leaning on it, and its naturally tubular geometry allows the internal wiring and LEDs to be housed. Bamboo grows fast, requires no replanting, and needs little processing to become a structural material.
Standing up from a bed or sofa requires more coordination than it initially seems. It demands controlled engagement of the upper trunk at the exact moment when the arms and shoulders may not have enough strength to compensate. LB1 addresses this by offering a stable point to hold onto, reducing the effort needed to initiate the movement and making the transition to a vertical position more immediate and less demanding.
The lamp is composed of two canes: a vertical one at 85 cm tall and 6 cm in diameter, and a horizontal one at 35 cm long and 4 cm in diameter, joined and secured with an M8 bolt. The LEDs sit inside the horizontal cane and cast light downward through openings cut along the grain of the bamboo. The project was developed through a prototype built with workshop tools and has evolved into three height variants: 65, 75, and 85 cm
